Music Theory

Taking an exam? Want to better understand your music?

Music Theory classes will prepare students for Theory Examinations using the RCM curriculum. Music Theory is designed to complement private lessons for a deeper understanding of music.

Students will solidify fundamental concepts including:

  • Note reading

  • Rhythms and time signatures

  • Intervals

  • Key signatures

  • Triads, chord progressions, and harmonies

  • Musical literacy and analysis

Completing this theory course will set you up for success with tools to understand music on your own. While this course will equip students to take an RCM Theory exam, students do not need to enroll in exams to participate in the course.

Viva 21st Century

Discover the amazing possibilities of 21st-century music!

Listeners often do not know how melodious, beautiful, adventurous, and exciting new music can be; but composers are still hard at work. Dr. Marvin Rosen’s job is to bring to you and share with you musical discoveries - except it is not a job for him; it is a passion! When you enroll in our 21st-Century Music course, you will be entertained as well as educated.

We will share a variety of new music by composers who are from our time and writing today. Students have greatly enjoyed listening to music from all over the world, and many countries, including South Africa, Lithuania, Iran, Australia, and more. New recordings are added continuously. The class has a slight emphasis on piano compositions; however, all instrumentations including choral works are included.

Composers today are writing in many different styles of very enjoyable listening music. It is important that musicians discover this world of possibilities - new music is a young person's experience!

This class will open your ears to wonderful music and creative possibilities.
